Hurt Go Happy
by Ginny Rorby
Thirteen year old Joey has been deaf since she was seven. Her mother has never let her learn to sign, insisting instead that she learn to read lips and appear “normal.” While this is not easy, Joey has always complied. Then she meets Charlie, an old man with a baby chimpanzee named Sukari. Sukari can sign, and Charlie wants Joey to learn too. Slowly, Joey’s mother comes to accept Charlie and Sukari as an important part of Joey’s life. And through Sukari Joey is able to face her past and find her own future.
